HISTORY
The city wall was very close to the Esterházykeller at the time of the Turkish war in 1683. Prince Esterházy made armies available to defend the city. The story tells that the defenders were provided with free wine before the fight and then fought against the Turkish superiority with a lot of courage and good humor. This was the beginning of serving wine in the Esterházykeller.
The handmade bricks of the original vault from the 15th century tell of sagas, legends, wine bliss and customs. The Esterházykeller has remained a place of conviviality, joie de vivre and communication to this day.
Joseph Haydn, the great composer, was Kapellmeister to Prince Esterházy. He was also a great wine lover and found inspiration for many of his works over good wine in the Esterházykeller.
